Bill split calculator
Subtotal
$86.40
Tax
$7.67
Tip
$17.28
Total
$111.35
Each person pays
- Person 1$37.12
- Person 2$37.12
- Person 3$37.11
The tip is 20% of the subtotal before tax.
Shares add up to exactly $111.35. After rounding everyone down to the cent, 2 cents were left over, so the first 2 people pay 1¢ more.
How the bill split calculator works
- Tax. Enter it as a percentage of the subtotal or as the dollar amount from the receipt. A percentage is rounded to the nearest cent.
- Tip. A percentage is worked out on the subtotal before tax, or on the subtotal plus tax if you switch to after-tax. You can also type a dollar amount.
- Total. Subtotal + tax + tip.
- Shares. In an even split, each person pays total ÷ number of people. In a by-item split, each person pays total × (their items ÷ subtotal), so tax and tip are shared in proportion to what each person ordered.
Everything is calculated in whole cents. Each share is rounded down to the cent, and the cents left over are handed out one at a time, so the shares always add up to exactly the total. In an even split the extra cents go to the first people in the list; in a by-item split they go to the people whose exact shares were closest to the next cent.
Worked example
The calculator starts with a $86.40 subtotal, 8.875% sales tax, and a 20% tip on the pre-tax subtotal, split three ways:
- Tax: $86.40 × 8.875% = $7.668, rounded to $7.67
- Tip: $86.40 × 20% = $17.28
- Total: $86.40 + $7.67 + $17.28 = $111.35
Split evenly, $111.35 ÷ 3 is $37.1167. Rounding everyone down to $37.11 covers $111.33, leaving 2¢, so two people pay $37.12 and one pays $37.11.
Split by item, with Alex at $32.50, Sam at $24.00, Jordan at $29.90, each person pays their fraction of the $111.35 total:
- Alex: $111.35 × $32.50 ÷ $86.40 = $41.89
- Sam: $111.35 × $24.00 ÷ $86.40 = $30.93
- Jordan: $111.35 × $29.90 ÷ $86.40 = $38.53
Those add up to $111.35. Had the tip been worked out after tax, it would be $18.81 instead of $17.28, for a total of $112.88.
Frequently asked questions
Should you tip on the amount before or after tax?
Either is common. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal pays a percentage of the food and drinks only; tipping on the total including tax is simpler to work out from the receipt and comes out slightly higher. The calculator lets you choose.
How do you split a bill fairly when people ordered different amounts?
Add up what each person ordered, then give each person the same fraction of the tax and tip as their fraction of the subtotal. Someone who ordered 40% of the food pays 40% of the tax and 40% of the tip. The by-item mode does this for you.
Why does one person pay a cent more than the others?
Totals rarely divide evenly into cents. The calculator rounds every share down to the cent, then hands out the leftover cents one at a time so the shares add up to exactly the bill. In an even split the first people listed get the extra cent; in a by-item split it goes to whoever's exact share was closest to rounding up.
How do I split shared appetizers or a bottle for the table?
In by-item mode, enter shared items in the shared field. Their cost is divided evenly across everyone and added to each person's items before tax and tip are shared out.
If I paid the whole bill, how much did I actually spend?
Only your own share. The rest is money your friends owe you, so for budgeting it is better tracked as a repayment you are waiting on than as your own spending.
